Jameos del Agua, located in Lanzarote, is a remarkable Art, Culture, and Tourism Center created by the visionary artist César Manrique. This captivating attraction is nestled within a volcanic tunnel, representing a harmonious blend of artistic creation and the surrounding natural environment.

Opened in 1968, Manrique, renowned as a painter and sculptor, transformed the space into a unique masterpiece, embodying his ideology of integrating art with nature. Similar to La Cueva de los Verdes, Los Jameos del Agua emerged from the aftermath of the La Corona Volcano eruption. The term “jameo” originates from the ancient Guanche language and refers to the collapse of the roof of a volcanic tube, which occurred here in the volcanic tube of La Corona.

Manrique skillfully enhanced the beauty of the environment, using his artistic resources to shape the basalt and create an unparalleled space in the world. The project was completed in 1977, marking Manrique’s initial significant intervention in the Lanzarote landscape. It was recognized as a Site of Scientific Interest and an Asset of Cultural Interest, designated as a Historic Garden.

The complex consists of three jameos or openings. The Jameo Chico serves as the entrance and houses a restaurant, along with a concealed access point to the renowned Tunnel of La Atlántida. The Jameo Grande features a stunning swimming pool, while the Jameo de la Cazuela is located behind the auditorium stage.

The natural auditorium within Los Jameos del Agua is an extraordinary space, crafted from basalt stone, with a seating capacity of 550 people. It boasts exceptional acoustics and is situated within a section of the volcanic tube, enhancing its beauty and sound. The seating follows the natural slope of the floor, which leads from the Jameo Grande to the next jameo, creating a seamless flow.

One of the main highlights of Jameos del Agua is its subterranean aquatic habitat, characterized by a crystal-clear lagoon approximately 7 meters deep. Originating from the filtration of seawater, this unique volcanic ecosystem lies below sea level. It is home to an array of fascinating endemic species, totaling around 77, with the renowned Blind Crab, or Munidopsis Polymorpha, taking center stage as both the symbol and protagonist of the center. The biodiversity found here holds significant scientific interest.

Jameos del Agua stands as a testament to César Manrique’s ingenious vision, showcasing the beauty of Lanzarote’s natural landscape while integrating art and culture in perfect harmony. Visitors can immerse themselves in the captivating ambiance of this extraordinary creation and marvel at the wonders of nature within its subterranean realm.
