K9 Animal Shelter Tenerife truly shows what it means to make a difference together. Founded in 1993 by three women in the south of Tenerife, Refugio de Los Animales – K9 has been dedicated to rescuing and caring for abandoned dogs and cats. What began with a few kennels built by friends and volunteers has grown into a shelter that now houses up to 75 dogs and a cattery where cats and kittens can play, rest, and wait for their forever homes.
Every bit of help matters. Whether it is walking a dog, cuddling a cat, or donating supplies, you can truly brighten the lives of the animals. The shelter always needs bleach, cat litter, treats, cans of meat and puppy biscuits.
The animals get much-needed time out of the kennels, and the volunteers enjoy fresh air, exercise, and the joy of making a real difference. K9 receives no official funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the public. From the early days of car boot sales and dinner dances to today’s fundraisers and community support, it has always been a struggle to keep up with the growing number of animals in need. Yet, thanks to countless helpers, K9 continues its mission.
Located near Las Chafiras in South Tenerife, the shelter is always open to new supporters. Whether you live on the island or are just visiting, this is a meaningful way to give back to the community.
