If you consider yourself an animal lover, Tenerife Horse Rescue – hidden away in the middle of nowhere, near the tiny village of La Jaca in Arico – is the perfect holiday activity.
Tenerife Horse Rescue is a fully sustainable non-profit organization – entirely run by volunteers. The sanctuary gives a loving home to more than 350 animals and 20 rescued horses. Their focus is to create a relaxed and safe environment for horses and animals in need around the Canary Islands. They are rescued and come to Tenerife Horse Rescue to live, free from force and pain.
Soon, Tenerife Horse Rescue will provide travelers with a once-in-a-lifetime holiday experience – spend a night in the Mongolian yurt at the animal sanctuary. The eco-accommodation is enclosed by handmade bottle walls and a herb garden wall to create a private paradise in the heart of the sanctuary. Everything has been built from recycled materials by the hands of the volunteers.
In addition to being a horse rescue and animal sanctuary, Tenerife Horse Rescue is also a sustainable living community. It operates on the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling. For example, Tenerife Horse Rescue collaborates with local supermarkets to reduce food waste. Furthermore, their yurt and eco-holiday accommodations are almost exclusively made from recycled materials.
The eclectic mix of exciting offers will not make it hard to find something new to discover around every corner. Yet, Mr. Tumnus – the resident baby goat – is the hidden star of the show.

I really loved the tour they gave us here. It’s entirely run by extremely passionate volunteers who stay and eat (freegan) there, they build everything on their own, it’s just bretahtaking to see. To hear of all the animal’s stories is so cute and the same time heart-breaking sometimes. I love their second hand shop, where you can buy clothes for 2€ and all the money goes to the animals!
Our team got a lovely tour from two of the volunteers and we learned so much! Everybody at the rescue is 100% committed to providing the best possible life for all the animals which I found really amazing. The atmosphere was just powerful as everybody is working towards the same goal, no matter what their actual tasks are. I have a lot of respect for everbody volunteering and designating their time to care for the 500 animals there, no matter which species. Thank you!
I had such a great time visiting this lovely place! A big group of volunteers working and living together in a way that’s good for the environment, but also helps the animals! Unique and one of a kind!
A place full of kindness and love for animals. A safe haven for horses and hundreds of different animals, completely sustainable and eco-friendly. Highly recommended 🙂
