A holiday at Finca de Arrieta, will immerse you in the luxurious off-grid atmosphere that invites you to unplug and reconnect with nature. This charming, self-sufficient eco-village is the prime example of how ecotourism doesn’t always mean giving up modern facilities and rich amenities. However, one way to embrace responsible travelling is giving back to the environment while enjoying stunning views, rest and detox.
EDUCATION, AWARENESS AND POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
At Finca de Arrieta, education, awareness and positive-reinforcement are at the heart of their sustainability initiatives. Lanzarote Retreats aims to extend its sustainable impact to the local community. They have just started a partnership with a community organisation Lanzarote Limpia to organise beach clean-ups. On a smaller scale, the Finca invites guests to join frequent clean-ups around the estate.
Armed with bags and gloves the Finca de Arrieta guests of all ages gathered to get dirty and clean the estate and the neighbouring beach. Naturally, the Canary Green team joined forces with the Lanzarote Retreat team and got to work spreading the word & rounding up the troops.
On arrival at the ground and beach, it didn’t appear to be so littered and dirty but upon closer inspection, there didn’t seem to be an end to the amount of rubbish we found. Instead of pressing the snooze button and slurping cocktails by the pool, the Lanzarote Retreats team, Canary Green, and other sustainably-minded travellers formed a team of 25 volunteers and set out to make a real difference for Lanzarote’s environment.
BEACH CLEANUP: AN ALTERNATIVE BEACH DAY
While donning heavy duty gloves and using eagle eye vision to hunt down any scraps of litter is maybe not what comes to mind when you think of a Lanzarote beach day. But, it is one of the best ways to enjoy the coastline. Not only does it give you a chance to get up close to the natural beauty of the beach, it is also a super social activity. Groups of like minded people gathered together with one aim- to clear the coastline. The result? A fun-packed Wednesday and a huge amount of waste cleared from one Lanzraote’s beach.
This beach cleanup was a great success and it would not have been possible without the invaluable help from Lanzarote Retreats. Together we can make positive change on the island for a sustainable future.
