Looking for a rush of adrenaline
Heavy ropes weighing on our shoulders, sturdy helmets protecting our heads and metallic carabinas clancing against our hips as we are making our way down the rough terrain of the barranco in front of us. Most of us are giggling to hide that rock climbing is way out of our comfort zone. But as fully immersing oneself is at the forefront of sustainable travelling, there is no room for doubts and second-guessing.
Standing at the bottom of the rocks that we are about to climb, reaching their barely visible tops seems like an impossible task. However, our climbing guide Eric encourages us to push our own boundaries. He explains that the first step to accomplishing everything you set your mind to is to get out of your head and tune into your body. After a few deep breaths, all of our worries are forgotten.
We can all agree that nothing beats the feeling of standing on top of the mountain that you just conquered. Tenerife’s volcanic basalt offers world class bouldering and rock climbing. However, in order for outdoor climbing and bouldering to remain open around Tenerife, we need to be aware of our social responsibilities and environmental impact when climbing. This is why Eric and his team are trying to educate people on how to enjoy nature in a sustainable way.
After a short, but thorough introduction – already strapped into our harness, our feet are itching for more heights. Working together with your team partners by correctly communicating with them takes away most of the initial fear. Soon enough we truly feel invincible, as our glowing eyes wander to appreciate the natural beauty around us. The descent towards solid ground allows us to practice trust and teamwork. Coming down from this rush of adrenaline, high-fives and hugs are exchanged and our chests are fill with pride.
The sun slowly sets behind the mountain as we leave the canyon behind us. We all agree that even though our limbs are aching for rest, rock climbing with El Ocho Climbing school was an invigorating activity through and through. We would do it again in a heartbeat!
What an experience,
when you realise how capable you actually are fighting with yourself, your mindd and the gravity.
It teaches a lot toward self-confidence and on top of it allows us to reconnect a bit with mother nature!
