A dusty gravel road leads through the small winding streets of the La Jaca outskirts in Arico until you are greeted with a colorful sign – announcing that you have successfully reached Tenerife Horse Rescue.
Hidden away in a landscape that can easily be mistaken for the Wild West – the horse Rescue and animal sanctuary gives a loving home to a plethora of rescued animals.
Even though horses were the focus, in the beginning, Tenerife Horse Rescue did not stop there. Today, Tenerife Horse Rescue serves as a sanctuary for all sorts of animals, rescued from all over the island. On top of that, Tenerife Horse Rescue is a big advocate for sustainability and mindful living. The fully self-sufficient, zero-waste community is truly trailblazing the way for responsible tourism.

A genuine dedication to sustainability
At Tenerife Horse Rescue sustainable living means promoting food waste reduction. They collaborate with local supermarkets to feed the hungry Finca and work towards their zero-waste goals. In addition, Tenerife Horse Rescue feeds the animals with whatever is left after the volunteers have taken their pick. Moreover, the electricity comes from handmade wind turbines, solar power and a generator. A favourite among the visitors is the bike powered washing machine system. Furthermore, most of the building materials are recycled from the bins, discarded pallets and waste.

The dedication and idealism is felt at every step of the way. Tenerife Horse Rescue has created a community of passionate individuals working together to create a relaxed environment for horses and animals so they can live free from force and pain.

A visit at Tenerife Horse Rescue will immerse you in their culture of genuine care and fill your heart with gratitude. Interacting with the rescued animals is the perfect way to slow down and to become more mindful. It is truly inspiring that 2 years ago, Emma Greenfield and her team started with nothing more than an undeveloped piece of land. Today, with the help of countless volunteers, Tenerife Horse Rescue has managed to build this amazing initiative from the ground up.
